1. Acceptance of Terms
By downloading, installing, or using Mate ("the App"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, you may not access or use the App. These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and Mate.
2. Description of Service
Mate is a shared home-screen mat app that lets friends leave notes, stickers, photos, and drawings together. The App provides:
- Shared mats with friends, shown on the Home Screen widget
- Notes, emojis, photos, stickers, drawings, and GIFs on a collaborative canvas
- Explore feed for public mats (like, save, fork, and publish)
- Push notifications when a friend updates your mat or sends a friend request
- Friend invites via username, invite code, share link, or QR code
3. User Accounts
To use the App, you must create an account using one of the supported sign-in methods: email (password or sign-in link), phone number (SMS verification), Sign in with Apple, or Google. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account. You agree to provide accurate and complete information when creating your account and during profile setup, and to update this information as needed.
You must immediately notify us of any unauthorized use of your account or any other security breach. We will not be liable for any loss or damage arising from your failure to comply with this requirement.
4. Free Tier & Premium
Mate offers a free tier with up to 3 mats you create and basic mat features, including notes, emojis, photos, drawings, basic stickers, and widget access. Friend count is not limited on the free tier. A shared mat cannot be created if either person already has 3 mats (unless they have Premium). Premium unlocks unlimited mats, forking mats from Explore, publishing mats to Explore, GIFs, premium stickers, and exclusive background colors and styles.
You may subscribe to Premium through in-app purchases managed by Apple (weekly or yearly plans). Subscription terms, pricing, auto-renewal, and cancellation details are shown at purchase time. You can restore previous purchases from within the App. We reserve the right to modify free tier limits with reasonable notice to users.
5. Acceptable Use & User Content
You agree not to:
- Use the App for any unlawful or unauthorized purpose
- Post content that is harassing, hateful, pornographic, or otherwise inappropriate
- Impersonate others or attempt to access other users' accounts
- Interfere with or disrupt the integrity of the App or its servers
- Use automated scripts or bots to interact with the App
- Resell, redistribute, or sublicense the App or its services
You retain ownership of content you place on mats. By publishing a mat to Explore, you grant Mate a non-exclusive license to display that content in the App. You can report content or block users from within the App.
6. Intellectual Property
All content, features, and functionality of the App — including but not limited to text, graphics, logos, icons, images, software, and code — are the exclusive property of Mate and are protected by applicable intellectual property laws.
7. Third-Party Services
The App uses third-party services such as Firebase (authentication, database, messaging), RevenueCat (subscriptions), Sign in with Apple, Google Sign-In, and Apple frameworks. We do not control those services and are not responsible for their availability or policies.
8. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Mate and its officers, directors, employees, and agents shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, goodwill, or other intangible losses, resulting from:
- Your use of or inability to use the App
- Any unauthorized access to or alteration of your data
- User-generated content on mats or Explore
- Any third-party conduct or content related to the App
9. Disclaimer of Warranties
The App is provided on an "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" basis without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or free of viruses or other harmful components.
10. Termination
We reserve the right to suspend or terminate your access to the App at any time, with or without cause, and with or without notice — including for violations of these Terms or Acceptable Use. Upon termination, your right to use the App will immediately cease.
11. Changes to Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated Terms within the App and updating the "Last updated" date. Your continued use of the App after such changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
12. Governing Law
These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with applicable laws, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the App shall be resolved through binding arbitration or in the courts of the applicable jurisdiction.
